Preparing for an antenatal visit

A little preparation can make an antenatal consultation more focused. Bringing accurate dates, current medicines and relevant reports helps your doctor understand your pregnancy history and current concerns.

Useful information to bring

  • The first day of your last menstrual period, if known.
  • Previous ultrasound, laboratory or prescription reports.
  • A list of medicines, vitamins and supplements you are currently taking.
  • Details of previous pregnancies, deliveries or pregnancy complications.
  • Any medical conditions, allergies or previous operations.

Questions worth writing down

Note any symptoms or questions before the visit so they are not forgotten. These may include nausea, pain, bleeding, fetal movement, nutrition, medicines, travel or activity.

Seek prompt care for concerning symptoms

Heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, seizures, breathing difficulty or another serious symptom should be assessed urgently rather than waiting for a routine antenatal appointment.
